American Airlines Policies: Everything You Need to Know

The Big Picture on American Airlines

American is the world's largest airline by fleet size and passenger count, operating out of major hubs in Dallas-Fort Worth, Charlotte, Miami, Chicago O'Hare, and Philadelphia. You'll get a carry-on bag included on all fares, decent wifi that's now free for loyalty members, and a cancellation policy that's gotten friendlier in recent years. But bag fees have crept up, Basic Economy comes with real limitations, and the pet policy has some quirks worth knowing about.

If you're deciding between American and another carrier, the key advantages are the free carry-on on Basic Economy (United doesn't offer that), free wifi for AAdvantage members (free to join), and one of the largest domestic route networks. The downsides are higher checked bag fees than some competitors and a Basic Economy product that won't let you pick your seat.

Carry-On and Personal Item Policy

Carry-On Bag (Free on Most Fares)

Every American Airlines passenger -- including Basic Economy -- gets a full-size carry-on bag and a personal item at no charge. That's a meaningful advantage over some competitors who restrict Basic Economy to a personal item only.

Your carry-on must fit in the overhead bin and can't exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm), including handles and wheels. If it doesn't fit in the sizer at the gate, you'll have to check it and may be charged.

Personal Item

Your personal item -- purse, laptop bag, small backpack -- must fit under the seat in front of you. Maximum size is 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm). There's no charge for this on any fare.

Checked Baggage Fees

American's checked bag fees apply to domestic flights within and between the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands:

• 1st checked bag: $40 at the airport, $35 if you prepay online
• 2nd checked bag: $50 at the airport, $45 if you prepay online
• 3rd+ bags: $150 each

Standard checked bags must be 62 linear inches or smaller and weigh 50 pounds or less. Overweight bags (51-70 lbs) incur a $100 fee, and oversized bags cost an extra $150.

International Checked Bag Fees

For travel to and from Canada, the Caribbean (except Cuba and Haiti), Mexico, Central America (except Panama), and Guyana, fees mirror domestic rates -- $35-$40 for the first bag and $45-$50 for the second. Transatlantic and transpacific routes often include at least one free checked bag depending on your fare class, but always verify when booking.

How to Avoid Bag Fees

• AAdvantage Gold status: 1 free checked bag
• AAdvantage Platinum and above: 2 free checked bags
• Citi / AAdvantage credit card: 1 free checked bag on domestic itineraries
• Active military: Up to 5 free checked bags
• Premium cabin fares: Business and First Class include checked bags

The Citi AAdvantage card is the easiest workaround for occasional travelers. The annual fee pays for itself if you check a bag just a few times per year.

Cancellation and Change Policy

American has eliminated change fees on most fare types, but Basic Economy is the exception:

• 24-hour rule: Cancel within 24 hours of booking for a full refund, no questions asked, as long as you booked at least 2 days before departure
• Main Cabin and above: No change fees. You'll pay or receive a fare difference, but there's no penalty
• Basic Economy: Non-changeable and non-refundable after the 24-hour window. You lose the ticket value
• Refundable fares: Full refund to original payment method anytime before departure

If American cancels your flight or significantly changes the schedule, you're entitled to a full refund regardless of fare type. That's a federal regulation, not just an American Airlines policy.

Trip Insurance and Credits

When you cancel a non-refundable ticket, you'll receive a travel credit for the value minus any fees. Credits are tied to the passenger name and typically valid for one year from the original ticket date. If you're on the fence about booking, the 24-hour window is your safety net -- book now, decide later.

Name Change Policy

American Airlines allows name corrections but has strict limits:

• Minor corrections: Fixing typos or misspellings is generally allowed at no charge. Call AAdvantage customer service or visit the airport
• Legal name changes: Marriage, divorce, or court-ordered name changes are accepted with proper documentation
• Full name transfers: Not allowed. You can't transfer a ticket to a different person

The golden rule: your ticket name must match your government-issued ID. Double-check before you confirm your booking. It's much easier to fix within 24 hours of purchase.

Seat Selection Policy

What you can pick depends on your fare:

• Basic Economy: Seats are assigned automatically. You can't pick or change your seat
• Main Cabin: Free standard seat selection at booking. Preferred seats near the front cost extra
• Main Cabin Extra: Extra legroom seats starting around $20-$90 per segment
• Premium cabins: Full seat selection included

AAdvantage elite members get complimentary access to preferred seats and Main Cabin Extra, depending on tier. If you're traveling with a group on Basic Economy, be prepared for the possibility of being split up -- there's no way to guarantee adjacent seats.

Upgrading Your Seat

You can upgrade to a better seat or cabin class through the American Airlines app or website after booking. Upgrade offers sometimes appear at check-in at a discounted price. AAdvantage elites are eligible for complimentary upgrades to First Class on domestic flights when space is available, with Executive Platinum members getting the highest priority.

Pet Policy

American allows small dogs and cats to fly in the cabin on domestic flights and some international routes:

• Cabin fee: $150 each way for domestic flights
• Pet carrier size: Must fit under the seat. Hard-sided carriers can't exceed 19 x 13 x 9 inches. Soft-sided carriers are slightly more flexible
• Weight limit: Pet plus carrier must not exceed 20 lbs
• Age requirement: Pets must be at least 8 weeks old

American updated its policy so that the pet carrier no longer counts as your carry-on. You can bring both a pet carrier and a personal item or carry-on bag -- that's a nice perk most people don't know about.

American doesn't transport pets as checked baggage. For larger animals, you'll need to use a pet shipping service like American Airlines Cargo.

Wifi and Entertainment

American has made a major push to offer free wifi for loyalty members:

• AAdvantage members (all tiers): Free high-speed satellite wifi, sponsored by AT&T, rolling out across the entire fleet
• Non-members: Wifi available starting around $10 per flight
• Coverage: Available on nearly all domestic and international flights

The free wifi rollout started in early January and is now available on the majority of narrowbody and regional flights. If you're not an AAdvantage member, signing up is free and takes two minutes -- there's no reason not to get the free wifi.

In-seat entertainment screens are available on most widebody aircraft. On planes without screens, you can stream content to your own device through the American Airlines app. Download the app before your flight -- you'll use it for boarding passes, flight tracking, and entertainment.

Power Outlets

Most American Airlines aircraft have power outlets or USB ports at every seat. Narrowbody planes typically have USB-A ports, while newer aircraft and premium cabins have standard AC outlets. Bring a charging cable -- you'll want your devices topped off for the free wifi.

Other Key Policies

Unaccompanied Minors

Children ages 5-14 must travel as unaccompanied minors on nonstop or direct flights. The fee is $150 each way. Kids 15-17 can travel alone without the service but can opt into it.

Boarding

American boards in 9 groups. First and Business Class board first, followed by elite status holders. Main Cabin passengers board in Groups 4-9 based on fare type and check-in time. Basic Economy always boards last.

Standby

Same-day standby is free for Main Cabin and above on domestic flights. You can list yourself on an earlier or later flight through the app. Basic Economy fares aren't eligible.

Food and Drinks

Short domestic flights offer complimentary snacks and soft drinks in Main Cabin. Longer flights and premium cabins get meals. Alcoholic drinks cost $9-$10 in economy on domestic routes.

AAdvantage Program

American's loyalty program earns Loyalty Points based on dollars spent. Status tiers are Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, and Executive Platinum, each with progressively better perks including upgrades, bag waivers, and lounge access.

Admirals Club

American operates Admirals Club lounges at most major airports. Access comes with an Admirals Club membership ($650+/year), a Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Card, or Oneworld Emerald/Sapphire status. Day passes are available for around $65 when purchased in advance. The lounges offer complimentary food, drinks, wifi, and a quieter place to wait for your flight.

Oneworld Alliance

American is part of the Oneworld alliance, which means your AAdvantage miles and status work on partner airlines like British Airways, Qantas, Japan Airlines, and Cathay Pacific.
