PIT Airport Overview

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) entered a new era on November 18, 2025, when its brand-new $1.7 billion terminal officially opened to passengers. After four years of construction, the facility replaced the former landside terminal building with a completely modernized facility featuring 12 security checkpoint lanes (up from seven), a state-of-the-art baggage handling system, dramatically improved concessions, and a better international arrivals experience.

The new terminal positions PIT as one of the most modern airport facilities in the Eastern United States. With Aer Lingus launching new direct service to Dublin in May 2026 and United Airlines adding nonstop service to Los Angeles, PIT's route network is growing alongside its infrastructure.

The New Terminal (Opened November 2025)

The new terminal represents the most significant infrastructure investment in PIT's history. Key features include:

• 12 security checkpoint lanes — Nearly double the capacity of the previous seven lanes, dramatically reducing security wait times.
• Advanced baggage handling system — Reduced the conveyor belt system from eight miles to three miles, meaning luggage arrives at baggage claim significantly faster.
• 15+ new local and national concessions — Including Mineo's Pizza (a Pittsburgh institution), Shake Shack, Champion City Sports Bar, and other local Pittsburgh concepts.
• Improved international arrivals — Enhanced facilities for processing international passengers more efficiently.

Terminal Layout

PIT's airside terminal (the main gate area) predates the new terminal construction and continues operating. The new facility serves as the landside hub where travelers check in, clear security, and connect to the airside gates. The airside portion has four concourses — A, B, C, and D — connected by an underground tunnel people mover system. Gates span a wide arc of the airside building.

Airlines at PIT

PIT is served by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, and Allegiant Air. International carriers include Air Canada and, starting in May 2026, Aer Lingus with new direct service to Dublin, Ireland. Getting To and From PIT

28X Port Authority Bus

The Port Authority of Allegheny County operates the 28X Airport Flyer bus service, connecting PIT to downtown Pittsburgh in about 30 to 40 minutes. The bus runs frequently during peak hours and is a reliable, affordable option for downtown-bound travelers. It stops at key Oakland and downtown Pittsburgh locations.

Rideshare and Taxi

Uber and Lyft pick up at the designated ground transportation area outside the new terminal. Downtown Pittsburgh is about 20 to 25 minutes and $30 to $45. Oakland (University of Pittsburgh area) is about 20 minutes and $25 to $40. The North Shore (PNC Park, Acrisure Stadium) is about 20 minutes and $30 to $45. South Hills is 20 to 25 minutes and $30 to $40.

Rental Cars

All major rental car brands operate at PIT. The rental car facility is accessible from the new terminal. A rental car is useful for exploring the Pittsburgh region, visiting wine country in southwest Pennsylvania, and reaching West Virginia or Ohio.

Parking

PIT has both terminal-adjacent parking and economy lots. Daily garage rates run $22 to $28. Economy lots are $12 to $15 per day with shuttle service. The new terminal improves the overall parking-to-terminal flow compared to the previous facility.

Lounges

• American Airlines Admirals Club — Available to Admirals Club members and eligible American passengers.
• Delta Sky Club — Available to Sky Club members and eligible Delta passengers.

Dining and Shopping

The new terminal has dramatically improved PIT's food options. Notable openings include:

• Mineo's Pizza — A Pittsburgh institution serving classic Pittsburgh-style pizza since 1958. One of the most anticipated new airport food additions in recent Pittsburgh history.
• Shake Shack — Premium fast casual burgers, shakes, and fries.
• Champion City Sports Bar — A Pittsburgh sports-themed bar with local craft beers and game-viewing. Given Pittsburgh's fanatical sports culture, this is a natural fit.
• Primanti Brothers — The iconic Pittsburgh sandwich shop with its signature coleslaw-topped sandwiches is available airside.
• Starbucks, Dunkin' — National coffee chains available throughout the concourses.

Wi-Fi and Connectivity

PIT offers free Wi-Fi throughout the new terminal and airside concourses. The new terminal has significantly improved power outlet and USB charging coverage compared to the previous facility. TSA PreCheck lanes are available at the new 12-lane security checkpoint.

Tips for Navigating PIT

• The new terminal is genuinely excellent. If you have not flown through PIT since before November 2025, you will be pleasantly surprised. The old terminal was aging and congested; the new one is spacious, efficient, and modern.
• Eat Primanti Brothers. The coleslaw-and-fries-on-the-sandwich tradition at Primanti Brothers is one of the most distinctive regional food experiences in Pennsylvania. The airport location is the most accessible version for travelers.
• Aer Lingus to Dublin starting May 2026. PIT now has direct access to Ireland for the first time, via Aer Lingus. This is enormously significant for western Pennsylvania's large Irish-American community and for business travelers with European connections.
• The 28X bus to downtown is reliable. For downtown-bound travelers, the Airport Flyer bus is the most cost-effective option and runs frequently during business hours.
• Pittsburgh sports culture. The Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates all have strong followings. Champion City Sports Bar is the place to decompress with a beer after a game or before a flight.

Nearby Hotels

The Hyatt Place Pittsburgh Airport is the most convenient on-site option. The Marriott Pittsburgh Airport and the DoubleTree by Hilton Pittsburgh Airport are within 5 to 10 minutes of the terminal. Downtown Pittsburgh, about 20 to 25 minutes by rideshare, has excellent hotel options including the Omni William Penn Hotel and the Fairmont Pittsburgh.
